Job Title: Diesel Mechanic

Reports To: General Foreman
SUMMARY
Diagnose problems, repair and perform general maintenance and servicing of all equipment and vehicles including adjustment of engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulics, electrical systems; tune up engines, ignition parts, perform minor body repair; respond to road calls.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Ability to overhaul/repair any and all diesel-powered buses
▪ Operate precision instruments or gauges in checking clearances
▪ Use of computers and computer-aided diagnostic equipment
▪ Must have good knowledge of disassembly, diagnosis and reassembly
▪ Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition
▪ Test drive buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly
▪ Repair and adjust seats, doors, and install and repair accessories
▪ Perform preventive maintenance and make inspections of vehicles for proper working order and safe operation
▪ Perform required state inspections; comply with all federal, state, county, and local regulations
▪ Maintain work records, time and material records on transportation equipment and vehicles
▪ Use of wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hoists, grinders, lathes and welding equipment as well as pneumatic and power tools
▪ Maintain shop equipment, tools, and shop area
▪ All work must be done in a safe, neat and quality manner with minimal supervision
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
▪ Knowledge of welding practices and techniques
▪ Knowledge of diesel and gasoline powered engines
▪ Knowledge of routine vehicular maintenance
▪ knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems in general
▪ Skilled in reading and interpreting technical information
▪ Skilled in making mechanical adjustments and repairs
QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Obtain a Commercial Driver License (minimum class B) with a
Passenger endorsement.
▪ Physical ability to lift and move various equipment, tools, and supplies.
▪ Ability to periodically pass the Department of Transportation physical examination conducted by the company physician.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education equivalent to completion of high school plus experience in the
Diesel Mechanic Helper classification; or Diesel/Automotive certification.
